MI5 Chief Warns Artificial Intelligence Is Increasing Threats to UK National Security

LONDON:The head of Britain’s domestic intelligence agency MI5, Sir Ken McCallum, has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasing threats to the United Kingdom’s national security.

According to Sir Ken McCallum, the growing use of AI poses serious security challenges, including the possibility of terrorists and hostile states developing lethal biological weapons.

He also identified Russia as the biggest threat, stating that Russian spies and proxy groups were targeting the United Kingdom and its allies.

The MI5 chief highlighted the need to strengthen Britain’s ability to identify and respond to emerging security risks associated with rapidly advancing technologies.

He further revealed that a dedicated centre had been established this year to assess and monitor AI-related threats.

His remarks underscore growing concerns among intelligence agencies about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence by terrorist organisations and hostile state actors, particularly in developing dangerous capabilities and carrying out activities that could threaten national security.
