Report Claims Decision Taken to Impose Emergency in KP; PTI Warns of Deepening Crisis

ISLAMABAD:Television anchor Kamran Shahid has claimed that a high-level meeting at the Presidency reached a final decision to impose an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, amid escalating tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration.
In a post on social media platform X, Shahid said, citing what he described as credible sources, that participants in a meeting held at the Presidency had agreed on imposing an emergency in the province.
According to his report, sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate have been summoned for October 13 to facilitate the process. He said the proposed move would be based on a report submitted by the provincial governor concerning the law and order situation.
Shahid also suggested that efforts by Maulana Fazlur Rehman to reverse the reported decision were unlikely to succeed. However, the claimed final decision and the reported parliamentary arrangements have not been independently confirmed.
### Barrister Gohar Opposes Emergency in KP
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has warned that imposing governor’s rule or an emergency would aggravate the crisis rather than resolve the province’s security challenges.
Speaking to the media after meeting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi in Peshawar, Gohar said federal intervention had weakened the authority of the provincial government.
He claimed that the province was effectively already under governor’s rule, with only a formal announcement remaining.
“The solution to terrorism is not governor’s rule or an emergency,” Gohar said, warning that such measures would be harmful to both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the federal government.
He said there was agreement on the need to eliminate terrorism, but the disagreement concerned the approach to achieving that objective.
### PTI Raises Concerns Over Arrests and Imran Khan’s Meetings
The PTI chairman called for the immediate restoration of meetings with party founder Imran Khan, claiming that restrictions on such meetings had remained in place for a year. He argued that restoring access could help improve the political situation.
Gohar also alleged that three provincial ministers, nine members of the provincial assembly and eight members of the National Assembly had been taken into custody.
He further expressed concern over the reported detention of Imran Khan’s sisters and a cousin, urging the country’s leadership to abandon its rigid approach and demonstrate political wisdom.
The PTI chairman called for dialogue and political engagement to address the growing tensions, maintaining that extraordinary constitutional measures would deepen divisions rather than resolve the underlying problems.
The reported emergency decision remains unverified, while the dispute highlights continuing disagreements between the federal government and the PTI over security policy, governance and political freedoms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
