Preparations for Emergency or Governor’s Rule in KP Reportedly Complete

PESHAWAR: Reports have emerged that the federal government has completed administrative and security preparations for the possible imposition of an emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid political tensions and a fragile law and order situation.
According to media reports citing sources, preliminary administrative work concerning the transfers of deputy commissioners and secretaries has been completed. Lists of proposed new postings for regional and district police officers have also reportedly been prepared.
Among the options under consideration is the possible imposition of an emergency initially in 12 sensitive districts of the province.

Sources cited in the reports said the final decision would depend on the outcome of ongoing political contacts between government and opposition representatives. Although formal negotiations are reportedly not taking place, backchannel and confidential contacts between the two sides are said to be continuing.
The reports suggest that if these behind-the-scenes efforts succeed, the government could defer a decision on imposing an emergency or governor’s rule.
Meanwhile, the central leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has reportedly become active in consultations over the evolving situation.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and other senior party leaders are reportedly expected to hold an important meeting with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi today. During the meeting, the chief minister is expected to be briefed on messages and proposals allegedly conveyed through backchannel contacts at the federal level.

The consultation is also expected to focus on PTI’s long march strategy and possible measures to respond to constitutional steps that the federal government may take regarding the province.
According to the reports, important decisions could emerge from the meeting between the chief minister and the party leadership concerning the political situation and the party’s future course of action.
However, the reported preparations and proposed measures have not been officially confirmed by the federal government.
