Extra Units Found in Electricity Bills — Important Guidance for Consumers

Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) — A case of overbilling in electricity bills has come to light concerning electricity consumers in Lahore, where reports indicate an alleged discrepancy between AMI smart meter readings and the units recorded in bills. According to reports, it has been claimed that extra units were added to the bills of some consumers, raising concerns over heavy electricity bills.

Reports of Discrepancy in Smart Meter Readings

According to reports, the communication systems of some AMI smart meters of Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) were allegedly blocked or muted. Following this, reports emerged of adjustments being made in billing, as a result of which a difference was observed between the meter reading recorded on the bill and the accompanying meter photograph.

These reports also alleged that extra units were added to consumers’ bills in this manner. However, a separate examination of each affected meter and bill is necessary to clarify the facts of any particular consumer’s case.

Line Losses Target Also Under Discussion

The reason behind this matter is said to be an effort to meet LESCO’s line losses targets. On the other hand, complaints have also emerged that consumers affected by abnormal bills are facing financial difficulties.

According to the report, this matter was also raised in the Punjab Assembly, where the Speaker summoned LESCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Muhammad Ramzan Butt. In the committee meeting, attention was also drawn to consumers’ complaints regarding overbilling.

Previous Actions Regarding Overbilling

The report stated that previously, action was taken against overbilling on the instructions of Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. During this period, LESCO’s line losses ratio was also mentioned as having reached approximately 15 percent. According to the report, complaints began to surface again after the actions ended.

How Can Consumers Check Their Electricity Bills?

Consumers should compare the units recorded on the bill with the current meter reading. If a photograph of the meter is available with the bill, they should also check the reading recorded on it. In case of any clear discrepancy or abnormal bill, they should contact the relevant LESCO office or the official complaint system and request an examination and correction of the bill.

It should be noted that for the final confirmation of overbilling allegations, investigation by the relevant institution and examination of records are essential.
