IMF Calls for Gas Pricing Structure Based on Targeted Subsidies

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called for Pakistan’s gas pricing structure to be designed on the basis of targeted subsidies.
According to sources, the prevailing oil prices were discussed during negotiations between Pakistani authorities and the IMF. The Pakistani side also highlighted the difficulties faced by the public due to the imposition of an Rs80-per-litre levy each on petrol and diesel.
During the talks, the IMF called for restructuring the gas pricing mechanism around targeted subsidies to ensure that financial support is directed toward deserving consumers.
Meanwhile, negotiations between the Petroleum Division and the IMF will continue today. The talks are expected to include a briefing on the circular debt in the gas sector.
The discussions are part of ongoing efforts to address energy-sector challenges and improve the financial sustainability of Pakistan’s gas market.
