KP Emergency Buzz: Old 2009 Punjab Governor’s Rule Report Goes Viral

LAHORE: Amid reports circulating about the possible imposition of governor’s rule or an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, an old news report from 2009 regarding governor’s rule in Punjab has resurfaced on social media, reigniting debate over political positions and reactions to constitutional measures.

Journalist Majid Nizami shared the old report on social media, drawing attention to the political developments that followed the imposition of governor’s rule in Punjab in 2009.

According to the journalist’s post, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had at the time described governor’s rule as a “slap in the face of the people’s democratic mandate” and called upon the nation to rise against the decision.

The post also recalled that protests during that period witnessed incidents of violence and arson, with police checkpoints, government and private vehicles and banks allegedly set on fire in the name of exercising the “democratic right” to protest.

The resurfacing of the 2009 report has triggered discussion among political and public circles about how political parties have criticised decisions taken against them in the past, while their positions and narratives may change when circumstances and political roles are reversed.

The old report has resurfaced at a time when speculation is growing over the possibility of governor’s rule or an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid tensions between the federal and provincial governments, disagreements over the proposed long march, stalled negotiations and differences over counterterrorism policies.

The renewed discussion has highlighted what critics describe as contradictions in the political positions of different parties over constitutional measures, protests and the use of state authority.

Observers say the ongoing political confrontation between the centre and the province, coupled with the security situation, has increased concerns about political instability and the possibility of further tensions.
