Sindh Minister Denies Political Interference in Universities

KARACHI:Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards Muhammad Ismail Rahoo has denied any political interference in universities by the provincial government or any political figure.
Commenting on the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari, Ismail Rahoo said the resignation would be reviewed and a decision would be taken in accordance with the law.
The minister said all Vice Chancellor appointments were being made on merit through a highly transparent procedure, rejecting claims of political interference in the affairs of universities.
A few days ago, Professor Hussain Mehdi resigned as Vice Chancellor of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari. At the time, he reportedly said that he could not continue working under pressure from political and criminal elements.
According to sources, action against alleged ghost employees and officials accused of harassment had contributed to the Vice Chancellor’s resignation. The sources further claimed that he had been threatened with removal over allegations of harassment.
The provincial government has maintained that university affairs and appointments are being handled in accordance with established legal procedures.
