Government Open to Talks but Dialogue Must Be Serious, Says Azam Nazeer Tarar

ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar has said the government is not opposed to negotiations, but any dialogue must be serious, adding that the release of former prime minister Imran Khan is a matter for the courts, not the government.
Speaking to the media outside Parliament House, Tarar said Imran Khan’s medical examination had been completed by a board comprising senior doctors. He said the purpose of the examination was to determine whether there was any threat to Khan’s life or health. According to government statements, Khan was examined at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), with doctors from Shifa International Hospital also present, and was subsequently described as medically fit.
Tarar said Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, had also been involved in the medical examination process and had confirmed that the PTI founder was healthy. He added that if there were any legal issues concerning Khan’s treatment or other matters, the courts should address them.
The law minister said that political problems could not be resolved by marching on Islamabad or holding rallies and demonstrations. He questioned whether PTI’s repeated attempts to move towards the federal capital and Punjab were an appropriate way of pursuing political demands.
He said Pakistan had a constitutional, legal and judicial mechanism for resolving disputes, while legislation in Parliament was subject to detailed debate.
Tarar maintained that the government had never refused serious talks or negotiations. However, he said decisions regarding the release of prisoners were made by the courts and that cities could not be held hostage to force the acceptance of political demands.

On the controversy surrounding bar council elections and lawyers’ degrees, Tarar said the bar councils and the lawyers’ electoral system were internal matters of the legal profession. He said neither a political leader nor the government had the authority to issue judgments on those matters.
Regarding questions about lawyers’ degrees, Tarar said his degree, along with those of other lawyers, had been verified by the Pakistan Bar Council in 2020 and that the relevant records were available. He challenged those raising allegations to examine the official records and said those who had made false allegations should either apologise or face penalties under the law.
