Three Killed, Three Injured in Militant Attack in Lakki Marwat

PESHAWAR:Three people were killed and three others injured when armed militants opened fire on a group of local residents in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said.

According to police, the incident took place near Abdul Khel in the jurisdiction of Shaheed Haibat Ali Khan Police Station in Dara Pezu town.

Preliminary information suggested that the victims were returning to their village, Abdul Khel, from Shah Hassan Khel after attending a cricket match when armed assailants opened fire on them.

Three people were killed on the spot, while three others sustained injuries in the attack. Police identified the deceased as Umair, Sadiq Amin and Aliyan.

The injured were identified as Imdadullah, Asifullah and Ijaz Khan. Police said the attackers fled the scene after carrying out the shooting.

Following the incident, the bodies of the deceased and the injured were shifted to the government city hospital, where the injured were provided medical treatment.

A local resident said that a large number of people from the village, mostly young men, had travelled to Shah Hassan Khel to watch a cricket match. After the match, some of them were returning home in a rickshaw when armed men targeted them.

The attack triggered concern among residents in the area. Police officials said an investigation had been launched after preliminary information was collected, while efforts were underway to determine the identities and whereabouts of those responsible.

The incident comes amid reports of renewed militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A day earlier, 12 people were reportedly killed and 35 injured in a suspected suicide attack and gunfire at a checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan.

Earlier, on September 18, an attack during Friday prayers at the old police lines in Kohat reportedly killed 21 people and injured more than 100 others.

Security and law-enforcement agencies have continued investigations into the recent attacks as authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the renewed violence in the province.
