Imran Khan’s Uncompromising Approach Has Ended Power Politics for His Party and Others: Hamid Mir

ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist and analyst Hamid Mir has said that the formula adopted by powerful circles and the government to remove PTI founder Imran Khan from politics has failed, claiming that Pakistan’s politics continues to revolve around him.

In a video commentary on the country’s current political situation and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) long march, Hamid Mir said those in authority had believed that Imran Khan’s political chapter would end after he was imprisoned, but that did not appear to be happening.

He said the government and its allies were pushing to keep Imran Khan in prison, while the opposition was mobilizing for his release. He also claimed that Imran Khan had emerged as a popular political figure both within Pakistan and internationally.

Discussing power politics, Hamid Mir said traditional power politics in Pakistan was now nearing its end. He argued that Imran Khan’s uncompromising and steadfast approach had undermined the traditional political strategy of his party as well as other political forces.

The senior journalist said there had previously been a perception that a government backed by the United States could remain in power. However, he questioned why a government that was genuinely popular among the people would need to rely on containers and other restrictions.

He further claimed that young people across the country, from Gilgit-Baltistan to Balochistan, had developed a common political narrative and that the ruling elite was concerned about it.

Regarding PTI’s internal decisions and the September 27 long march, Hamid Mir claimed that some party members had proposed supporting the creation of new provinces in an effort to secure some relief for Imran Khan. However, according to him, the majority rejected the proposal, considering it inappropriate at the present time.

He further claimed that the government subsequently made efforts to persuade the PTI to call off the long march by offering relief to Imran Khan, but the party rejected the offer, saying that Imran Khan had already given clear instructions to finalize the long march and proceed towards Islamabad.
