President Asif Zardari Is Being Pressured to Either Resign or Fight on This Issue: Senior Journalist Mohsin Baig

Lahore (Qudrat Daily) — Senior journalist Mohsin Baig has said that discussions are currently underway in various circles on the issue of new provinces and administrative units, and President Asif Zardari is being pressured to either resign or come to a fight on this issue — both scenarios will bring further political instability.

According to Mohsin Baig’s tweet on X, discussions are currently taking place in various circles on the issue of new provinces and administrative units. Provinces should certainly be created, and it would have been better if they had been created long ago, but the way new provinces have now been announced has raised concerns among several political parties. The Sindh government and the PPP were pushed, and they also passed a resolution in their provincial assembly against the division of Sindh.

There is currently an atmosphere of tension. Those who have now started this campaign have done nothing but send a message, because they do not have influence or command over this matter.

New provinces will be created only in accordance with the 1973 Constitution, and the Constitution lays down the procedure for creating provinces. If an attempt is made to create new provinces by force, deviating from this, it will cause further damage — and if new provinces are created by minus-ing the PPP, that would cause even greater damage. President Asif Zardari is currently being pressured to either resign or come to a fight on this issue; both scenarios will bring further political instability.

At present, the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Azad Kashmir is already very bad, and the law and order situation is extremely deteriorating. If provinces are created without discussion and consensus, this instability will reach central Pakistan. Therefore, it is essential that all stakeholders be taken into confidence on the provinces issue, that discussions be held, negotiations conducted, and only then a decision made.

Currently, there is talk of creating provinces, but it is not being told what the formula for the provinces or administrative units will be. Under what formula will they be run? How will resources be distributed? What will be the procedure for demarcation? If a local government system is introduced after administrative units, how will it function? These are all questions whose answers must first be obtained; only then should provinces or administrative units be created through national consensus.
