Petrol Price Rises by Rs21.88 per Litre in Just Three Days, Burdening Consumers

ISLAMABAD: The government has imposed a record increase in petroleum product prices over just three days, adding further pressure on inflation-hit consumers across Pakistan.
According to official documents, the government is collecting up to Rs133 per litre above the actual cost of petrol and diesel in the form of taxes, levies and various margins.
Media reports citing the documents said the actual cost of petrol is Rs234.73 per litre, while the government is imposing Rs131.60 per litre in levies, taxes and different margins. As a result, petrol is being sold at around Rs133.02 per litre above its actual cost.
Similarly, Rs122.55 per litre is being collected in the form of levies, taxes and margins on high-speed diesel above its actual cost.
The documents showed that petrol and diesel prices have witnessed a continuous and sharp increase over the past three days.
As of September 7, petrol was priced at Rs345.87 per litre. It increased by Rs21.88 per litre within three days, taking the new price to Rs367.75 per litre.
High-speed diesel was priced at Rs378.05 per litre on September 7. After an increase of Rs14.62 per litre over three days, its price has reached Rs392.67 per litre, its highest level.
The latest increases have added to the financial burden on consumers already struggling with rising inflation and higher living costs.
