Indus Waters Treaty Ruling Is a Victory for Pakistan’s Position: Sarfraz Bugti

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti has said that the decision of the international arbitration court on the Indus Waters Treaty is a victory for Pakistan’s legal position.

In a statement, Bugti said that justice had prevailed and the ruling demonstrated the strength of Pakistan’s legal stance on the treaty.

According to the chief minister, the international court had made it clear that India could not unilaterally suspend or terminate the Indus Waters Treaty. He said the treaty remained in force and India was legally bound by its provisions.

Sarfraz Bugti said any amendment to or termination of the treaty could only be made with the mutual consent of both countries.

He said the ruling was significant for protecting Pakistan’s longstanding water rights and national interests.

The Balochistan chief minister added that Pakistan would continue to play an effective role at legal and diplomatic forums to safeguard its water rights, describing the international arbitration court’s decision as further evidence of the strength of Pakistan’s legal position.
