9/11 Trial of Alleged Mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Set to Begin in 2028

WASHINGTON:The trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, is set to begin in 2028, according to a US military court ruling.

The US military tribunal has ordered that the trials of four defendants accused of involvement in the 9/11 attacks will begin on June 5, 2028. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is among those facing trial.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was captured in 2003 and has been held for more than two decades at the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The military judge issued the ruling just days before the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

In 2001, hijackers seized four US passenger planes and crashed them into major targets in New York and Washington. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks.
