World’s Oldest Person, Tomiko Atoka, Passes Away at 116
Tokyo:Tomiko Atoka**, the woman recognized as the world’s oldest person, has passed away at the age of **116**.
According to international media reports, Tomiko Atoka, a Japanese woman from the city of **Ashiya**, passed away recently. She made history as the world’s oldest person, living a remarkable life filled with resilience and longevity.
Born in **Ashiya**, Japan, Tomiko Atoka was known for her extraordinary strength and perseverance. During **World War II**, she managed her husband’s textile factory in **South Korea**, and after his passing in **1979**, she continued to live alone in the **Nara Prefecture** in western Japan.
Remarkably, at the age of **100**, she was able to climb the steps of the **Ashiya Shrine** without the aid of a walking stick. Later, in **2019**, she moved to a nursing home. While she could walk independently at that time, she eventually began using a wheelchair, but she continued to live with dignity.
In **December 2023**, Tomiko Atoka was officially recognized as **Japan’s oldest living person**. Her passing occurred on **December 29, 2024**, at a care home in **Ashiya**, **Hyogo Prefecture**, in central Japan.
