US Congress Members Urge Secretary of State to Advocate for Imran Khan’s Release

Members of the US Congress, Jo Wilson and August Plager, have urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to engage with the Pakistani government to ensure the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.

Jo Wilson shared a copy of the letter on X (formerly Twitter), calling for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan and the release of Imran Khan. The joint letter, sent to Secretary of State on February 25, demanded that the US take action and pressure the Pakistani government to free Imran Khan.

The letter states, “Imran Khan is highly regarded, and his release would usher in a new era in US-Pakistan relations. The founder of PTI was your Prime Minister during your first term, and you had a strong relationship with him. We urge you to work with Pakistan on democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and the freedom of expression for the people of Pakistan.” It further emphasizes that the strength of US-Pakistan relations depends on Imran Khan’s freedom.

Jo Wilson has continued to advocate for Imran Khan’s release on social media, particularly on X, in recent weeks. Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, has been incarcerated since August 2023, facing multiple cases that he claims are politically motivated.
