US Clarifies: Imran Khan’s Legal Matters to be Decided by Pakistani Courts
Islamabad:The United States has made it clear that the legal matters concerning former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan will be decided by the courts in Pakistan, and his cases will follow the country’s constitution and laws.
The US State Department provided a written response to Geo News regarding questions raised by former US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, and members of the US Congress concerning Imran Khan. In the written reply, the State Department stated that they could not comment on the correspondence from US Congress members regarding the matter.
A spokesperson from the State Department further emphasized that human rights are a crucial aspect of the US-Pakistan relationship, and the US continues to advocate for the upholding of democratic principles, constitutional rights, and human rights in Pakistan.
The spokesperson added that the US maintains regular communication with Pakistani authorities on issues, including human rights, and continues to engage with Pakistan as it does with countries around the world.
It is notable that members of the US Congress have written to President Joe Biden on two occasions, urging for the release of Imran Khan. Additionally, Richard Grenell, the nominated special envoy under incoming US President Donald Trump, has repeatedly called for the release of Imran Khan.
