UK MP John McDonnell Raises Concerns Over Human Rights Violations in Balochistan
London:British Member of Parliament John McDonnell presented a motion highlighting severe human rights violations in Gwadar, a coastal city in the province of Balochistan, Pakistan. According to the motion, security forces disrupted a peaceful gathering organized by the Baloch Unity Committee, a group known for advocating against enforced disappearances and the plundering of resources in Balochistan.
The motion further stated that the purpose of this gathering was to demand justice for the missing persons of Balochistan. It alleged that Pakistani security forces intercepted, harassed, arrested, and dispersed leaders and demonstrators associated with the Baloch Unity Committee. Additionally, internet services were reportedly shut down by Pakistani authorities to prevent news from reaching the public.
McDonnell urged the Pakistani government to restore internet services and provide information regarding the numbers of arrests, injuries, disappearances, and deaths. He strongly condemned the use of force against participants and called for restraint in dealing with future peaceful demonstrators.
The lives of individuals advocating for human rights in Balochistan are reportedly in jeopardy amidst escalating tensions.
