U.S. Presidential Envoy Richard Grenell Calls for Imran Khan’s Release on Social Media

Islamabad: Richard Grenell, the newly appointed U.S. Presidential Special Envoy for Mission Assignments under President Donald Trump, has called for the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on social media. Grenell shared a post on his social media platform, attaching a news story about his own appointment, which also included a call for the release of Khan.
In his tweet, Grenell explicitly demanded, “Release Imran Khan.” His call was quickly echoed by several prominent American politicians, including former Congressman and Trump ally Matt Gaetz, who also voiced support for Khan’s release.
Grenell, a seasoned diplomat, was appointed by President Trump last week as Special Envoy for Mission Assignments, a role that is likely to involve shaping policies towards some of America’s adversaries. In his capacity, Grenell is expected to work on high-stakes global issues, including those in Venezuela and North Korea, as well as managing diplomatic relations with countries in the Balkans.
Trump’s announcement of Grenell’s appointment highlighted his prior roles, including serving as U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Special Presidential Envoy for Serbia-Kosovo negotiations, and acting Director of National Intelligence during the Trump administration from 2017 to 2021.
While Grenell’s mission appears to focus on regions with complex U.S. relationships, his call for Khan’s release has raised hopes among Imran Khan’s supporters. Some leaders of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have applauded Grenell’s stance and are now calling for concrete actions to support Khan’s release.
Khan, who was arrested in a controversial move earlier this year, has garnered significant international attention, and the growing calls for his release are seen as part of broader efforts to apply diplomatic pressure on Pakistan’s current government.
