Peshawar: Typhoid fever cases are on the rise in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with over 10,000 cases reported in the past seven months. The Health Department has issued directives to District Health Officers, Medical Superintendents, Medical Directors of Teaching Institutes, and the Healthcare Commission regarding the treatment of typhoid.
The report indicates that there has been a significant increase in typhoid cases, with more than 10,000 affected individuals documented in the first seven months of this year. In July alone, hospitals reported 2,708 cases of typhoid. Of these, 51 cases were identified as Extensively Drug-Resistant (XDR) typhoid by laboratory tests. Hospitals have been instructed to diagnose typhoid fever, Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) typhoid, and XDR typhoid separately.
The Health Department has highlighted that typhoid can be transmitted through contaminated food, milk, frozen fruits, decaying vegetables and fruits, dirty water, and from affected individuals. It is mandatory to vaccinate all high-risk individuals and enhance awareness about hygiene practices.
