Two Pakistani-American Candidates Win Seats in U.S. Presidential Election
Dr. Suleman Lalani and Salman Bhojani Elected to Texas Assembly
Washington: The results of the U.S. presidential election continue to pour in, alongside outcomes for the Senate, House of Representatives, and state assemblies. In a significant development, the Republican Party has gained the majority in the U.S. Senate, winning 12 seats and bringing their total to 51 seats. To gain control of the Senate, a party needs 51 seats.
On the other hand, two Pakistani-American candidates, Dr. Suleman Lalani and Salman Bhojani, have successfully won seats in the Texas State Assembly. Both candidates hail from Karachi, Pakistan, and have been long-time residents of Houston.
In Michigan, Pakistani-American Ayesha Farooqui failed to win her race, while Erin Bashir, the only Pakistani-American candidate running for Congress, lost in Pennsylvania. Bashir had contested as a Republican.
Meanwhile, Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib was re-elected to Congress, securing her seat in Michigan. Tlaib, a Democrat, won a decisive victory. Another Muslim candidate, André Carson, was also re-elected to Congress, representing Indiana for a ninth consecutive term. Similarly, Ilhan Omar secured her seat in Minnesota’s 5th District.
