Trump Announces New Retaliatory Tariffs on Multiple Countries

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced retaliatory tariffs on various countries, signing an executive order at the White House to implement these new measures. In his address, Trump stated that the new tariffs would be beneficial for the U.S. and referred to the day as one of the most significant in American history.

Trump emphasized that today marked a day of economic freedom for the U.S., and the revenue from the new tariffs would be used to pay off national debt. He criticized how U.S. citizens had been sidelined for years while other nations grew stronger, and now, it was America’s turn for prosperity. He also noted that the additional tariffs would foster stronger competition and lower prices for goods.

The tariffs will include a 10% tax on all imports and a 25% tax on foreign-made vehicles. Specific tariffs will be applied to several countries, including:
– European Union: 20% additional tariff
– China: 34% additional tariff
– Japan: 24% additional tariff
– India: 26% additional tariff
– Israel: 17% additional tariff
– United Kingdom: 10% additional tariff
– Pakistan: 29% additional tariff
– Bangladesh: 37% additional tariff
– Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Afghanistan: 10% additional tariff each
– Vietnam: 46% additional tariff
– Taiwan: 32% additional tariff
– South Korea: 25% additional tariff
– Thailand: 36% additional tariff
– Switzerland: 31% additional tariff
– Indonesia: 32% additional tariff
– Malaysia: 24% additional tariff
– Cambodia: 49% additional tariff
– South Africa: 30% additional tariff
– Brazil and Singapore: 10% additional tariff each

The new tariffs are set to take effect on April 9.

However, the countries impacted by these tariffs are mostly developing or low-income nations, including some of the poorest countries like South Sudan, Burundi, and the Central African Republic. War-torn Sudan is also included in the list.

The White House clarified that the charts shown by President Trump include both retaliatory tariffs and a basic 10% tariff. For instance, Europe will face 10% retaliatory tariffs in addition to the 10% basic tariff, while China will have to pay a 24% retaliatory tariff along with the basic 10% tariff.

These tariffs will apply to over 100 countries worldwide.

**Criticism from Democratic Lawmakers**

Trump’s tariff announcement has faced sharp criticism from senior Democratic lawmakers. According to The New York Times, Senator Ron Wyden criticized the tariffs, claiming they would increase prices and exacerbate uncertainty. Wyden added that Trump’s short-term tariff plan would not restore American manufacturing or benefit working families. He accused Trump of imposing taxes on everyday goods to give tax breaks to his billionaire friends.
