Tension Flare-Up Between Naveed Qamar and Omar Ayub at National Assembly’s Finance Committee Meeting

Islamabad – A heated exchange took place during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance, between Chairman Naveed Qamar and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub.
The meeting, chaired by Naveed Qamar, saw a tense moment when Omar Ayub raised a question regarding the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) import policy. Ayub asked for clarification on the model being used, stating that he did not fully understand the system in place. In response, FBR Chairman explained that more time was needed to fully clarify the policy and requested two hours to provide a detailed explanation.
Omar Ayub, however, expressed frustration, saying that the FBR representatives often failed to provide simple, understandable answers. He added, “If they can’t explain it clearly, they should just write it in English, but they don’t seem to have the answer.” He further insisted that a brief explanation should be given during the meeting, as there was no time to waste with only four days remaining to finalize committee recommendations.
The exchange turned more tense as Ayub criticized the attitude of the FBR and the committee, stating that this behavior was unacceptable. Chairman Naveed Qamar responded by urging Ayub to move on, saying, “We can’t discuss this right now, please proceed with the next point.”
The incident highlighted the ongoing friction between the opposition and the government on key financial issues as both sides struggle to come to an agreement on the national economic policies.
