Sheikhupura: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) for purchasing electricity at higher rates.
Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Ideological) Aqib Iqbal Dar, speaking at a press conference, disclosed that a petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court challenging the agreements with IPPs, alleging they are involved in exploitative practices by selling electricity at exorbitant prices. Joining him in the petition are leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, Mustafa Kamal, and Gohar Ejaz.
Aqib Iqbal Dar urged Chief Justice of Pakistan to expedite the hearing of the petition on humanitarian grounds and in the interest of the nation, emphasizing that immediate orders should be issued to halt the capacity payments to IPPs. He further demanded an end to the culture of free electricity, gas, and petrol for government officials, stressing that all IPP owners should return any unlawfully acquired funds to the national treasury.
The move comes amidst growing public outcry over high electricity tariffs and alleged financial mismanagement within the power sector.
