Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has released its second quarterly performance report from December 17, 2023, to March 31, 2024. This report, issued in accordance with constitutional requirements for public information access, highlights several key judicial decisions and reforms.
According to the report, the Supreme Court reaffirmed the principle that resignation by a judge cannot be used as an escape from accountability. Action was taken against Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui for deprivation of fair trial rights, and decisions were made on the Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto reference and a special court ruling against Pervez Musharraf. Furthermore, rulings on disqualification cases were concluded during this period.
In a significant decision, the Supreme Court established the principle that consent of the wife is necessary for divorce. Over the three-month period, 5,427 cases were filed, out of which 3,974 were disposed of, indicating an increase of 1,453 cases.
During Chief Justice Pakistan’s official residence, there were 2 pairs of peafowl, needing veterinary care; after treatment, one pair was released into the Peafowl Valley in the national park.
