Supreme Court Forms Shariah Appellate Bench Under Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa
Islamabad: The Supreme Court has established a Shariah Appellate Bench for the first time in a long period, under the leadership of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. The five-member bench will start hearing cases from August 5.
The formation of the Shariah Appellate Bench was approved during a meeting of the Practice and Procedure Committee chaired by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. The bench will include Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, as well as Dr. Muhammad Khalid Masood and Dr. Qibla Ayaz, who will serve as scholarly judges on the Shariah bench.
Several appeals are currently pending in the Supreme Court against the decisions of the Federal Shariat Court, including appeals challenging the Federal Shariat Court’s rulings on the interest-based financial system. The newly formed bench will handle these cases and address issues related to Shariah law.
