Supreme Court Accepts Petition Against Fuel Price Adjustment Surcharge in Electricity Bills

Islamabad:The Supreme Court of Pakistan has accepted a petition challenging the fuel price adjustment surcharges in electricity bills. The court has also dismissed the objections raised by the Registrar Office on Jamaat-e-Islami’s petition. The constitutional bench of the Supreme Court decided to hear the case alongside the IPPs (Independent Power Producers) case.

Justice Jamal Mandokhail remarked that the taxes collected through electricity bills go into the national treasury. Meanwhile, Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi noted that hearings regarding electricity prices also take place at NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority). He inquired if Jamaat-e-Islami had ever raised objections during NEPRA’s hearings.

Justice Rizvi further pointed out that one of the major causes of line losses is electricity theft. He asked Jamaat-e-Islami’s lawyer whether the party had ever launched a campaign against electricity theft. The lawyer clarified that the petition challenges various surcharges and the Fuel Adjustment Charges (FAC) in electricity bills, which include different taxes and fees.
