Subaru Tops List of Most Durable Car Brands, Overtakes Toyota and Lexus
Islamabad: According to the annual Consumer Reports ranking for 2024, Subaru has claimed the top spot for the most durable car brands, surpassing Toyota and Lexus. Consumer Reports, a website known for ranking and reviewing consumer products, released the global list of the most durable car brands last week.
Each year, Consumer Reports surveys its members about issues they’ve encountered with their vehicles over the past 12 months. For 2024, data was collected from over 300,000 vehicles, including models from 2000 to 2024, with some 2025 models also included. The survey assesses 20 key issues, ranging from transmission and engine performance to electronics, interior quality, brakes, battery problems, engine warranties, and major vehicle failures.
The survey participants report problems with their purchased vehicles through a detailed questionnaire, helping to compile the rankings. For 2024, Subaru has emerged as the most durable car brand, with a score of 68/100. Lexus follows in second place with a score of 65/100, while Toyota ranks third with 62/100. Honda takes the fourth spot with a score of 59/100.
Subaru’s rise to the top is significant as the brand has surpassed Toyota and its luxury sub-brand, Lexus, in terms of durability for the first time. Known for its all-wheel drive systems and boxer engines, Subaru’s models like the Forester and Impreza received above-average ratings, although its electric model, the Solterra (which is a rebadged Toyota vehicle), scored below average.
Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, has long been recognized for its exceptional durability and powertrains. Four out of seven Lexus models scored above average in the survey. Toyota, historically renowned for its durability, secured third place despite some issues with models like the Tundra and the all-electric bZ4X, which brought down its overall score. The recall of nearly 100,000 trucks and SUVs due to faulty engines also impacted Toyota’s ranking.
Honda, a trusted name for reliable vehicles, secured the fourth spot with a score of 59/100. The brand is known for cars that can last millions of miles with regular maintenance. Of Honda’s models, three received above-average scores, while seven had average ratings.
Other brands in the top 10 include Acura (Honda’s luxury division) in fifth place with a score of 55/100, followed by Mazda, Audi, BMW, Kia, and Hyundai. Audi, a German luxury brand, was ranked seventh with a score of 54/100, while BMW followed in eighth with 53/100. Korean automaker Kia was the first non-Japanese brand to make it into the top 10, scoring 51/100. Hyundai rounded off the list in tenth place with a score of 50/100.
It’s important to note that this ranking is based purely on durability, as reported by Consumer Reports’ surveys. The list of the best vehicles in terms of overall satisfaction and owner contentment might vary.
