Sharp Increase in Broiler Chicken Prices as Ramadan Begins

Karachi, Pakistan:As the holy month of Ramadan commences, there has been a significant surge in the price of broiler chicken across the country. In the Karachi division, the price of broiler chicken has risen by 120 to 150 rupees per kilogram, with the price now ranging from 720 to 800 rupees per kilogram. Prior to Ramadan, the price of chicken was around 600 to 650 rupees per kilogram.
A representative from the Sindh Poultry & Retailers Association has accused distributors of artificially creating a supply shortage, which has driven up prices. According to the official, distributors have deliberately halted supply, leading to increased demand and higher prices.
Retailers have also pointed out that while the Karachi Commissioner has set the official price at 650 rupees per kilogram, store owners are unable to sell at that rate. They also highlighted that during inspections by district authorities, fines of up to 30,000 rupees are being imposed, making it challenging for them to operate under these conditions.
The association has warned that if distributors do not resume supply soon, retailers may go on strike starting Thursday, which could further disrupt the market.
