Islamabad: Opposition leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, has announced his intention to challenge the notification granting ISI authorization for phone tapping in court. Ayub cited notification SRO 1005(I)/2024 issued by the PTI-led government, which allows ISI to intercept and record conversations on any person’s phone under the guise of national security. He criticized the decision, alleging it could empower intelligence agencies to infringe on citizens’ privacy.
Omar Ayub further stated that he would challenge this “unconstitutional” notification through his lawyer, Dr. Babar Awan, emphasizing its potential misuse to target politicians, media persons, and other individuals. Meanwhile, Shahbaz Sharif has reportedly distanced himself from the government over this controversial move, marking a significant political development.
