Shah Mahmood Qureshi Criticizes the Use of “Traitor” Labels in Pakistani Politics
Rawalpindi: Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has condemned the long-standing practice of labeling political figures as “traitors” in Pakistan. Speaking to journalists at Kot Lakhpat Jail, Qureshi asserted that for 75 years, the issuance of treason certificates has been a recurring theme in Pakistani politics.
Qureshi emphasized that regardless of personal opinions, Imran Khan remains a significant political reality. He argued that political stability cannot be achieved without acknowledging the political presence of PTI’s founder. He also denounced the treatment of Nawab Akbar Bugti, describing it as an injustice and asserting that Bugti was not anti-Pakistan.
Further, Qureshi highlighted his own political journey, noting that despite being active in politics for 40 years, he had not faced any legal charges until recently. He criticized the recent surge in legal cases against him, suggesting they are politically motivated.
He also defended Mahmood Achakzai, labeling him a democrat whose democratic and constitutional values preclude him from being a traitor. Qureshi reiterated that the path to peace in Balochistan lies through negotiations, not accusations of treason.
