Islamabad: Shafqat Mahmood, a leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has announced his retirement from politics. In his statement, Mahmood revealed that after stepping into politics 34 years ago following his resignation from a government position, he has now decided to retire from active political engagement. “I wish to dedicate the remaining years of my life to writing and teaching,” he stated.
Mahmood clarified that his decision is not due to any pressure or intention to join another political party. “This announcement marks a personal departure from politics, driven by considerations of time and age,” he added, expressing agreement with those who believe that younger individuals should take the forefront in politics.
Reflecting on his political journey, Mahmood acknowledged the highs and lows, having served as a member of the Senate and National Assembly, as well as holding federal and provincial ministerial positions. “I am satisfied that I fulfilled all my responsibilities with utmost honesty and considered each position a duty,” he affirmed.
He expressed gratitude that he was never falsely accused during his tenure, highlighting achievements such as standardizing the national curriculum as Pakistan’s Minister of Education and successfully navigating the educational system through the challenges posed by COVID-19.
Mahmood extended thanks to Prime Minister Imran Khan for providing him the opportunity to serve and expressed appreciation to PTI and the constituents of his constituency for electing him twice. “My commitment to serving the country will continue through writing, teaching, and media,” he concluded, expressing hope that this journey will endure through these avenues.
Mahmood’s decision marks the end of an era in Pakistan’s political landscape, leaving a legacy shaped by his dedication to public service and educational reform.
