Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon Slams Critics, Reaffirms PPP’s Stance Against Canal Projects

Karachi, Pakistan:Sindh’s Senior Minister, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has responded strongly to recent criticism and reiterated the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) firm stance against the construction of canal projects. Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, Memon highlighted that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had clearly addressed the nation’s challenges and made it known that canals would not be allowed to be built under any circumstances.
Memon emphasized that Bilawal Bhutto’s statement on the canal issue was a clear message to all stakeholders. “Bilawal Bhutto spoke about the challenges facing the country and said, unequivocally, that canals would not be allowed. His position on the matter is a clear message for all,” he stated.
The senior minister also criticized the Punjab government for its failure to clarify where the water for the canals would come from, asserting that Pakistan belongs to all of its citizens. Memon stressed that the PPP operates on principles and that the party was focused on the wellbeing of 70 million people. He also addressed the controversy surrounding the minutes of a meeting with the President, asserting that the word “approval” was nowhere to be found.
Sharjeel Memon took aim at Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari, accusing her of trying to create conflict between the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He said, “Azma Bukhari’s statement reflects a lack of thought. It is unfortunate for someone in such a position to make such remarks. No wise person would make such a statement.”
The issue of canal projects in Sindh has been a long-standing point of contention, with the provincial government fiercely opposing them. Memon reiterated that the PPP’s policy was clear: no canals would be allowed to be built. He praised Bilawal Bhutto for his strong leadership, saying that the PPP Chairman had spoken out against the project during his historic speech at a memorial event.
Memon also noted that Bilawal had emphasized the importance of standing with the people rather than the Prime Minister, stating that the PPP would not allow the canals to be built under any circumstances. He added that external forces were attempting to harm Pakistan, and the PPP would not allow any such attempts to succeed.
Furthermore, Memon praised the work of former President Asif Ali Zardari, stating that Zardari had worked towards provincial autonomy during his tenure. He also highlighted Zardari’s role in launching the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award and his support for other provinces like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and the creation of the province’s name.
Sharjeel Memon concluded by announcing that PPP would hold a public rally in Hyderabad on April 18 to address all ongoing issues, including the controversial canal projects, and reaffirmed that the PPP was committed to unity among the provinces. He also advised the spokespersons of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government to focus on maintaining peace and order within their province rather than criticizing PPP leadership.
