Senator Irfan Siddiqui Reveals PTI’s Demands in First Round of Political Talks
Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, has disclosed that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party presented a set of demands during the first round of political negotiations, including the release of party leader Imran Khan and the establishment of commissions to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Siddiqui described the first round of talks as a significant step forward, stating that the PML-N did not react negatively to PTI’s demands. Instead, the party urged PTI to submit their demands in writing.
He emphasized that the PML-N was not given any specific instructions or guidance for the negotiations, and added that if PTI or the government had any communication with the establishment, he could not comment on it.
“We are not pretending to hold talks; we are engaging in discussions with an open heart. Our leadership has instructed us to make every possible effort to resolve the issues,” said Siddiqui.
He further stated that the leadership had directed them to go to any extent necessary to resolve matters. As for PTI’s demands, he mentioned that they would be assessed to see how feasible they are.
In response to a question about former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s role in the negotiations, Siddiqui clarified that there were no obstacles from Nawaz Sharif’s side. “We are engaging in talks very seriously,” he said.
It is noteworthy that the government and opposition have initiated talks to ease political tensions in the country. The first round of talks took place in Parliament today, with the second round scheduled for January 2, 2024.
