Russia Proposes Train Service to Pakistan via Iran, But Tafftan-Quetta Railway’s Condition a Major Obstacle

IslamabadضAmid growing economic and trade cooperation between Pakistan and Russia, the Russian government has proposed the launch of a train service connecting Pakistan through Iran. However, a significant hurdle in realizing this proposal is the dilapidated state of the Tafftan-Quetta railway line in Pakistan.

According to Pakistan Railway officials, the poor condition of the Tafftan-Quetta railway track currently limits freight trains to speeds of only 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. This slow pace poses a serious challenge to the feasibility of establishing a smooth and efficient train service for trade between the two nations.

Recognizing the strategic importance of this route for future trade, the Pakistani government has decided to upgrade the Tafftan-Quetta railway section. The upgrade is estimated to cost around 700 million dollars. Once completed, the improved track will significantly enhance trade connectivity and is expected to support a wide range of commercial activities along the route.

The upgrade of the Tafftan-Quetta railway line is seen as crucial for both regional trade and the expansion of Pakistan-Russia economic ties, with long-term benefits anticipated from the increased commercial flow between the two countries.
