Rs 1.47 Billion in Traffic Fines Collected in Sindh, But Chaos on Roads Persists

Public Demand Shift from Revenue Collection to Traffic System Reforms

Karachi: The Sindh government has set a new record in traffic fine collections during the fiscal year 2024-25, with traffic police across the province collecting Rs 1.47 billion—significantly surpassing the initial revenue estimate of Rs 1.25 billion.
According to official figures, the traffic fines exceeded expectations by over Rs 220 million. For the upcoming fiscal year 2025-26, the government has set an even higher target of Rs 1.72 billion in traffic fine revenue, marking a notable increase from previous years.
However, the public sentiment tells a different story. Citizens, especially in Karachi, question the effectiveness of such heavy fines. They argue that despite the record collections, traffic congestion, disorder, and violations remain widespread on the city’s roads. Many allege that the fines and informal payments are placing an increasing financial burden on the public without leading to real improvements in traffic management.
Public circles are now demanding a shift in focus—from merely imposing fines to making the traffic system more efficient. They are calling for greater investment in traffic infrastructure, stricter enforcement of laws, and widespread awareness campaigns to educate the public about traffic rules and road safety.
