Rawalpindi: Violent clashes erupted between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and police as the latter attempted to disperse the crowd during a protest. According to Express News, PTI supporters forcibly removed containers set up at Committee Chowk and began marching towards Liaquat Bagh, chanting slogans.
The situation escalated as police responded with tear gas to control the protesters. Intense confrontations were reported along Murree Road, with PTI workers throwing stones at the police. In light of the chaos, additional police forces were deployed to the area.
Reports indicate that tear gas canisters have fallen into nearby homes, leaving women and children in distress, while media personnel also faced the effects of the gas. The confrontation continued as PTI supporters retaliated by throwing back the tear gas canisters fired by the police.
The environment in the vicinity of Committee Chowk, Murree Road, and Rialto Chowk remained highly volatile, with PTI workers attacking police lines. The police, sounding sirens from official vehicles, faced a surge of PTI supporters who had gathered at various points.
Amid the clashes, PTI leaders Barrister Gohar and Salman Akram Raja were arrested near the H-13 area while they were on their way to Rawalpindi. Reports suggest that police have run low on tear gas and called for reinforcements.
As the situation unfolds, the police have begun arresting PTI workers, while the protesters have managed to push the police back in certain areas.
