Punjab Takes a Major Step Towards Environmental Leadership with Carbon Credit Program

Punjab has officially embarked on its journey to become a global environmental leader through the introduction of the Carbon Credit Program. Maryam Aurangzeb, in a recent statement, emphasized that this is the Punjab government’s first-ever project initiated under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
She highlighted that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been working on the Carbon Credit Program for the past year. The program is expected to reduce pollution, increase foreign exchange earnings, and promote green industry. It will integrate afforestation, green technology, and global investments, paving the way for a sustainable economy and Pakistan’s participation in the global market.
Maryam Aurangzeb noted that the development of the green industry, creation of new employment opportunities, and improvement of the country’s global reputation will be among the significant benefits of this initiative. She also mentioned that efforts have already begun at the grassroots level to eliminate methane gas emissions from landfill sites, with plans to target multiple environment-friendly projects across the province.
Maryam Nawaz is committed to establishing an environmentally friendly Punjab and securing carbon credits. Several such projects have already been identified, and in the future, carbon credits and substantial foreign exchange are expected to be generated. Additionally, Punjab has prepared a strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through Article 6 projects, with a specific focus on transforming the Lakhodair landfill into a valuable carbon credit resource.
The feasibility report for the project has been completed, and operational work, including the carbon credit regime and monitoring mechanisms, is underway. The carbon credit system is also set to benefit the local economy and communities in Punjab.
