Punjab Launches Free Solar Panel Scheme for 100,000 Consumers
One Lakh Solar Systems to Be Installed in a Year; Consumers Can Apply Online or via SMS
Lahore: Punjab has launched a Free Solar Panel Scheme for 100,000 consumers, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz officially inaugurating the “CM Punjab Free Solar Panel Scheme.” The initiative allows consumers to apply for free solar systems from the comfort of their homes via SMS or an online portal, starting immediately.
In her remarks, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the purpose of the scheme is to provide long-term relief to the public from the high cost of electricity. She mentioned that 73 million consumers in the province have already benefited from the subsidy of 14 rupees per unit.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed that public resources would be used exclusively for the convenience and relief of the people.
During a briefing on the scheme, the Provincial Secretary for Energy revealed that the initiative aims to install one lakh solar systems over the course of one year. Consumers who use up to 200 units of electricity per month will be eligible for free solar systems.
For consumers who use up to 100 units per month, a 550-watt solar system will be provided free of charge, while those consuming up to 200 units per month will receive a 1100-watt solar system.
The installation of one lakh solar systems in Punjab is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 57,000 tons. Additionally, the scheme will help lessen the burden of subsidies on the federal government.
