PTI’s Negotiations with Establishment and Political Parties: A Potential Threat to Government

Islamabad:Reports have emerged that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan recently met with the Army Chief in Peshawar, sparking discussions about direct negotiations between PTI and the establishment. Meanwhile, PTI’s interactions with former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s ‘Awam Pakistan Party’ and other political groups have also been ongoing, leading to speculation that PTI may be forming a grand political alliance with other parties.

In this context, V News spoke to various political analysts to explore whether PTI’s negotiations with the establishment and political parties could pose a threat to the government.

Senior analyst Mujib-ur-Rehman Shami told V News that since PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan’s meeting with the Army Chief, the atmosphere has been somewhat more cordial, with a noticeable reduction in tensions. However, the key question remains: Are these negotiations actually taking place? And if so, to what extent? Shami noted that while discussions are happening, there are still many unanswered questions. He expressed optimism regarding PTI’s meetings with other political parties, stating that if these are for a grand alliance, it would be a positive development. He emphasized that any decisions made in such a coalition would need to consider the views of all involved parties.

Shami further stated that PTI’s negotiations with the establishment and political parties do not pose a risk to the current government. “The government is standing strong, and I don’t think other political parties will support PTI in dismantling the system at this point,” he added.

Senior analyst Ansar Abbasi also shared his perspective, confirming that the government is not at risk due to PTI’s ongoing negotiations. According to Abbasi, the covert talks suggest that PTI has been told clearly that the current government and system will remain intact, and no changes will be made. As a result, PTI is not negotiating to remove the government and return to power.

Abbasi added that PTI’s key demands during both secret and public negotiations include securing the release of Imran Khan and other political leaders, dropping the cases against party leaders, and reducing the difficulties PTI is currently facing. He clarified that PTI is not negotiating to return to power but rather seeking relief from ongoing challenges.

Senior journalist Ahmad Waleed, however, expressed concerns that PTI’s negotiations with the establishment could indeed pose a threat to the government. He pointed out that the responsibility for difficult decisions lies with the current government, and if a national or new government were to be formed, it would benefit from the fruits of these tough decisions. “Political negotiations don’t seem likely to succeed. It appears that the government has initiated these talks to keep PTI occupied, as there’s little the government can offer PTI at this stage,” Waleed said. He also emphasized that before any decisions are made, the government will need approval from the establishment, implying that both open and covert talks will likely remain centered around the establishment.

As PTI continues its negotiations with both political entities and the establishment, the political landscape remains uncertain, with analysts divided on whether this will lead to significant changes in the government or just a temporary shift in dynamics.
