Islamabad: The ruling coalition has been deprived of its two-thirds majority in the National Assembly due to a Supreme Court decision, potentially paving the way for PTI to emerge as the single largest party in the National Assembly.
According to Express News, the Sunni Ittehad Council holds 84 seats in the National Assembly, while PTI’s supported 8 independent members bring its total supported members to 92. In light of the Supreme Court’s decision, PTI is set to gain 20 seats allocated for women and 4 minority seats, potentially increasing its total seats in the National Assembly to 116.
In total, PML-N currently holds 108 seats, making it the second largest party, followed by PPP with 68 seats. Other parties include MQM (21), JUI-F (8), PML-Q (5), Awami Muslim League (4), along with individual members from various other parties.
The Supreme Court’s decision regarding reserved seats will also directly impact the provinces, where PTI is set to gain 24 women’s seats and 3 non-Muslim seats in the Punjab Assembly, 2 women’s seats and 1 non-Muslim seat in the Sindh Assembly, and 21 women’s seats and 4 minority seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
On the flip side, the Supreme Court decision has deprived the ruling coalition of a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. In light of the Supreme Court’s decision, the ruling coalition’s total members will be reduced to 208, while opposition parties will increase their tally to 128 members.
This decision is likely to have significant implications for the political landscape in Pakistan, particularly as PTI maneuvers to consolidate its position as the leading political force in the country’s legislative body.
