PTA Introduces Mobile Number-Based VPN Registration for Freelancers Amid Widespread Internet Slowdowns
Islamabad:The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new facility for freelancers, enabling them to register for VPN services using their mobile numbers. This move aims to simplify the process of VPN registration, especially for freelancers who do not have static IP addresses. Freelancers can now register their mobile numbers with PTA to use VPN services on their mobile data connections.
The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to promote the IT sector and make VPN access easier for individuals working remotely or in digital professions. As of now, over 31,000 VPNs have been successfully registered through the PTA platform.
However, the country is currently facing widespread internet slowdowns, affecting millions of users. Slow browsing speeds and the inability to download videos and images from social media apps have become a major inconvenience. Many areas are also experiencing disruptions in Wi-Fi services, which is leading to problems with uploading and downloading content.
Online businesses, e-learning, and ride-booking services have been severely impacted. Delivery riders and gig economy workers, such as food delivery drivers and online taxi services, are facing challenges in maintaining their livelihoods. The ongoing internet issues are having a profound negative impact on Pakistan’s digital economy, with e-commerce businesses particularly hard-hit by the slow connectivity.
