Protests in Gwadar Intensify as Local Leaders Accuse Government of Severe Repression

Gwadar:Protests in Gwadar have been ongoing for several days, with local leaders voicing strong opposition against what they describe as government repression. The leaders have reiterated their stance both inside and outside the assembly, emphasizing that peaceful democratic protest is a fundamental right of every citizen and political movement. They have firmly stated that they will not support or allow the use of force against the protesters.

Since July 28, when the sit-in protest began, leaders have urged the government to resolve issues peacefully and address legitimate demands. They claim that government decisions have inflicted severe hardship on the people of Gwadar. Reports indicate that government measures to curb the protest have caused suffering not only in Makran but across Balochistan.

Leaders have highlighted that security forces are blocking food supply trucks coming from Karachi to Gwadar and Makran, exacerbating the distress among residents. They have called for meaningful negotiations with the protesters and condemned any use of force. They claim that the government’s strategy seems aimed at depriving Gwadar of essential supplies like rations and water.

The leaders criticized the government for setting up numerous checkposts along the Coastal Highway, which they argue obstructs the movement of people and goods. They expressed frustration over the inability of people from Gwadar to travel to other cities such as Karachi, Quetta, and Turbat, and similarly, those who have traveled elsewhere are unable to return.

Complaints have also been made about arbitrary and excessive checks, which they argue are degrading and humiliating. The leaders pointed out that these actions are causing widespread disruption, including affecting fishing industries and cutting off mobile phone and internet services.

In response, local leaders vowed to continue their resistance against what they see as unjust and oppressive policies, emphasizing that these actions have led to severe economic and social impacts on the local population. They have called for an immediate end to these measures and a return to dialogue and peaceful resolution.
