PPP Challenges Supreme Court Decision Regarding Reserved Seats
Islamabad: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has also challenged the decision regarding reserved seats in the Supreme Court. Farooq H. Naik, on behalf of the PPP, filed a petition on July 12th seeking a review of the decision concerning specific reserved seats, which includes a request to reconsider the ruling on reserved seats made on July 12th.
The Supreme Court had earlier declared the decision of the Peshawar High Court and the Election Commission null and void, ordering the allocation of specific reserved seats to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Parliament and provincial assemblies. The Supreme Court designated the PTI as a party in both the parliamentary and provincial assemblies.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had already filed a request for a review of the decision. However, the Practice and Procedure Committee of the Supreme Court has decided to schedule the review petition after the September holidays.
Chief Justice expressed dissent with the majority decision and opined that the petitions for review should be heard promptly, stating that delaying hearings until after the summer break would be unfair. He emphasized prioritizing constitutional considerations over judicial convenience, advocating against the nullification of summer vacations.
