PPP Announces Movement Against Punjab’s Proposal to Extract Canals from River Indus

The issue of extracting canals from the River Indus by the Punjab government has escalated, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) now announcing a movement against it. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has stated that the water issue is a matter of life and death for them, and they are raising the matter of extracting six canals from the River Indus at every platform. He further announced that they will launch a full-fledged movement on the issue.
In an informal conversation with journalists at the President House, Bilawal Bhutto emphasized the need for the government to build consensus on combating terrorism. He stressed that everyone must unite to eliminate terrorism.
Regarding the upcoming federal budget, Bilawal assured that the PPP will present the best proposals for the public, adding that preparations for it have already begun.
**Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah Vows to Prevent Extraction of Canals**
On the other hand, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed strong opposition to the Punjab government’s attempt to extract canals from the River Indus. He stated that while Punjab has been attempting to extract canals from the river since 2024, the Sindh government has put a stop to it and will not allow it to happen.
Speaking to the media at the Mazar-e-Quaid on Pakistan Day, Murad Ali Shah reiterated that their protest against the canals’ extraction is ongoing and will not allow such a move under any circumstances.
The issue of extracting canals from the River Indus has put the Punjab and Sindh governments at odds. Recently, PPP senior leader Qamar Zaman Kaira had mentioned that Punjab’s position on the canals’ extraction holds more weight, although they are also growing emotional over the matter in Sindh.
