PM Shehbaz Sharif’s ‘Oooo’ Protest Sparks Debate in Pakistan

Islamabad:Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ‘Oooo’ protest remark has sparked a wide conversation across political circles, with both the government and opposition discussing the matter.

On Thursday, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, while addressing a ceremony in Peshawar, announced the establishment of a nursing and medical college. He also mentioned that providing 50 crore rupees to the University of Peshawar this year was his responsibility. He further added, “If I do not provide the funds, protest against me by saying ‘Oooo’.”

In response to Ali Amin Gandapur’s advice, Federal Minister for Information, Atta Tarar, reacted by emphasizing that in civilized societies, protests should be peaceful and should not disrupt life. He praised Gandapur’s suggestion for peaceful protest and added, “It would have been commendable if on November 26 and May 9, instead of violent protests, there had been peaceful ‘Oooo’ protests.”

This debate stems from a viral video of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where he shares an anecdote from his recent visit to Japan. He explains that during his visit to a Honda factory, he heard the sound of ‘Oooo Oooo’ in the streets, which he initially didn’t inquire about. However, after hearing it a second time, he asked his host about it. The host informed him that the employees were protesting in this manner. Despite the protest, Shehbaz Sharif noted that the production continued and the protest was recorded in a peaceful manner with ‘Oooo’ sounds, unlike Pakistan, where protests often lead to violent clashes in Islamabad.

This conversation on peaceful protest, sparked by the Prime Minister’s comment, is now being widely discussed across Pakistan.
