PM Shehbaz Sharif Takes Major Step Towards Digital Economy and Cashless Society

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken a significant decision to accelerate the transition towards a digital economy and a cashless society in Pakistan. A high-level committee has been formed under the Prime Minister’s leadership, which will oversee weekly progress on efforts to digitize the economy.
In a high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Islamabad, a detailed review was conducted on the initiatives aimed at promoting digitalization. The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, FBR Chairman, and other senior officials.
Officials briefed the Prime Minister on the current developments, highlighting that clear instructions have been issued to merchants for enabling digital payments and fund transfers. Efforts are also underway to promote cashless transactions at the public level. Both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Information Technology presented progress reports on their respective initiatives.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the digital transformation of the economy is among the government’s top priorities. He stated that policy measures will encourage digital payments, which are essential for eliminating the informal economy and introducing greater transparency in the financial system.
The Prime Minister lauded the successful use of digital wallets for transferring financial aid to deserving individuals during the holy month of Ramadan. He called it a milestone that ensured transparency and eliminated the need for human intervention in aid distribution.
He further added that the country’s improving economic indicators—such as a decline in inflation, increased remittances, and a booming stock market—reflect growing investor confidence. He credited the government’s economic team for these positive trends, describing them as evidence of the country’s progress in the right direction.
