PM Shehbaz Sharif Highlights Global Efforts to Combat Islamophobia on World Day

Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the importance of combating Islamophobia on the occasion of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, observed on March 15. He reminded the global community of the significance of this day, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly three years ago. This decision was made in response to rising discrimination, hatred, and attacks on Muslim communities, as well as on their sacred symbols and places of worship, signaling a serious reminder of the challenges Muslims face worldwide.
In his message on the occasion of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that the day serves as a call for vigorous action, reflecting the global community’s collective desire to combat Islamophobia through strong legislation and policy measures.
He expressed pride in Pakistan’s leadership role in the United Nations for advocating this important cause, welcoming steps taken by some member countries to declare the desecration of the Holy Quran as illegal, as well as efforts to counter discrimination against Muslims. However, he stressed that much more needs to be done to eradicate the dangerous wave of Islamophobia and end the blatant violations of fundamental human rights and religious freedoms.
He further noted that at a time when religious intolerance is on the rise, it is imperative to emphasize that freedom of expression should never be used as a justification for insulting religions or sacred symbols. He emphasized that protecting the dignity of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is not just a duty, but a sacred trust for every Muslim, which must be upheld with full conviction. For global peace and harmony, respect for all religions and their revered figures is essential.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also called on the international community, human rights organizations, and global leaders to raise awareness about Islamophobia and to take concrete steps to prevent incidents of Quran desecration, attacks on mosques, and other forms of religious intolerance against Muslims. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s demand to address these issues and highlighted the need for the urgent appointment of a UN special envoy to combat Islamophobia, as per the UN General Assembly’s resolution.
Concluding his message, he urged the global community to not only use this day to speak out and act against the rising wave of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred but also to foster dialogue, harmony, and mutual understanding among religions, cultures, and civilizations. He stressed the need for these actions to overcome division and build mutual respect in diverse communities. Pakistan remains steadfast in its commitment to spreading the true message of Islam, which is love and peace.
