Peace Agreement Signed in Kurram District After Two and a Half Months of Violent Conflict

Islamabad:After two and a half months of intense conflict, a peace agreement has finally been signed between the warring factions in Kurram District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The provincial government’s spokesperson, Barrister Saif, announced on Wednesday that one side had signed the agreement a few days ago, while the other party signed it today.

The peace deal includes provisions for a ceasefire, the restoration of peace in the region, the dismantling of heavy weaponry, and the demolition of bunkers. Following the signing, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur expressed satisfaction over the success of the provincial government’s efforts to bring peace to Kurram. He called on all parties to reject divisive elements and work toward unity within their ranks.

Meanwhile, Barrister Saif revealed in a private TV channel interview that steps would be taken from tomorrow to reopen the only road linking Parachinar with the rest of the country, which has been closed for over two months following the November 21 shooting incident. He confirmed that the first convoy, carrying medicines, food, and other essential supplies, would head towards Parachinar on Saturday. The convoy will also include people, who will be provided security.

The situation in Kurram District has been tense since the attack on a passenger convoy on November 21. Since the incident, the only road linking Parachinar to the rest of the country has remained closed, leading to severe shortages of medicines and essential supplies. Reports of dozens of deaths due to a lack of medical supplies, including many children, have surfaced. Hundreds of patients are still waiting to be transferred from Parachinar to Peshawar for treatment.

In Karachi, protests were held yesterday over the road closure and the need for peace in Kurram. However, following the signing of the peace agreement, the protests in Karachi were called off.
