PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Stands Firm on Hybrid Model for Champions Trophy in Meeting with ICC Officials
Dubai:Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has reiterated Pakistan’s strong stance against the hybrid model for the upcoming Champions Trophy, making it clear to ICC officials in Dubai that Pakistan will not accept any such model. Naqvi further emphasized that if there are alternative options, they should be presented.
According to media reports, Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Dubai yesterday, where he spent a busy day at the International Cricket Council (ICC) headquarters, holding one-on-one meetings with ICC officials, including CEO Geoff Allardice. During these meetings, Naqvi presented Pakistan’s position on the Champions Trophy and outlined the country’s legal stance regarding the tournament’s hosting.
Naqvi is also set to join today’s ICC Board meeting via video link. The meeting, scheduled for 3 PM Pakistan time, will discuss various aspects of the Champions Trophy, including the venue and format. This will be the final ICC meeting chaired by Greg Barclay as Chairman, and discussions on the hosting of the Champions Trophy are expected to reach a crucial point.
**Concerns over Hybrid Model and Venue Options**
The “hybrid model,” which has been proposed as a potential solution for hosting the tournament between Pakistan and India, remains a contentious issue. Dubai, with its proximity to both Pakistan and India and a large expatriate population from both countries, has been suggested as a popular neutral venue. If this model is pursued, Naqvi has stated he would consult with the Government of Pakistan before making any commitments.
However, there is a possibility that today’s ICC Board meeting may not reach a decision on the Champions Trophy, and the matter could be deferred to the next meeting, which will be chaired by Jay Shah. Shah, who is expected to take over the presidency of the ICC, is anticipated to approach the issue with fairness, although his alignment with the policies of India’s ruling BJP may influence his stance.
**Possible Postponement of Champions Trophy**
In the worst-case scenario, the Champions Trophy could be postponed, with no confirmed date for its rescheduling as of now. It is speculated that the tournament might be delayed until next year, given the uncertainty surrounding the venue and format. Typically, the ICC is required to announce the schedule for international tournaments 100 days in advance, but due to India’s intransigence, the schedule for the Champions Trophy has not been released even though there are only 90 days remaining.
As the situation unfolds, the cricketing world is closely watching the developments, with Pakistan remaining firm on its position and seeking a fair solution that ensures the event is held without compromising its integrity.
